In Unraveling Ariadne’s Echo, Carmen Hurtado Pérez revisits the classical myth, shifting the focus from the hero’s narrative to the figure of Ariadne, who becomes the protagonist of her own labyrinth. Through a selection of works created over the last fifteen years, the artist explores the quest for freedom, articulating a poetic and visual language that weaves together painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, writing, embroidery, and assemblage.

A red thread runs through the exhibition, serving as a metaphor that traverses the entire house-gallery. Ribbons—reminiscent of umbilical cords and embroidered with words—act as traces of an initial connection to the mother.

Ariadne’s cloak, embroidered by the artist, functions as a second skin; it speaks to the identities we inherit, those we construct, and those we must shed in order to transform. The act of covering and uncovering oneself each day throughout the exhibition—of spinning and unravelling—becomes a performance centered on the passage of time, vulnerability, and resilience.

The exhibition invites a journey through the inner labyrinths of human experience, where the body, objects, and words preserve memory. Ariadne no longer waits, nor is she merely the one who offers a guiding thread to another; instead, she ventures into her own labyrinth, questions the inherited narrative, and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

In this process, "unravelling" does not simply mean undoing; it also signifies the opening of new possibilities for meaning. Freedom does not appear as a definitive exit, but rather as an ongoing pursuit—the capacity to transform our own history, recognize ourselves within our contradictions, and forge a path of our own.
