-THE ECHO OF ARIADNA
The cape is fashioned from a dress belonging to one of my aunts; I have embroidered onto it a depiction of Ariadne, taken from an antique engraving. I invite you to look at it closely, as she holds a tray in her hands containing three items—either pieces of fruit or balls of yarn.
During the summer, I wore this cape and spent my vacation in France winding and unwinding a ball of red wool—a rehearsal of sorts for what I do every day at the gallery. It is a symbolic act representing what freedom means to me, or perhaps a way of stepping into Ariadne’s shoes—weaving and unweaving, much like Penelope—in a gesture of symbolic tension and resistance.
